A trope is something like a character who is a pyromancer (Playing With Fire): something that recurs in fiction. Look at the page and see.

As for adding stuff they've got a handy guide.

Right, now that I'm no longer being distracted by Civ V, here and here are guides for those of you with no idea how to proceed about doing this. I know one person who for their sake shall remain nameless already mucked up an attempt to add a trope (which I later fixed, don't go looking for it) so I strongly recommend reading these, particularly as TVTropes' editing interface can be a bit...wonky at times.
