Another staticky warbling sound came from whatever it was, before a rhythmic thumping signaled that it was firing some sort of automatic weapon into the base.

Jeff's bullets ricocheted off the thing's shell without bothering it as its fire swept the room, tearing whoever it hit clean in half.

The tripod's larger gun charged up an energy blast as its machine gun kept the men behind cover, their small-arms fire bouncing off its shell.

A deafening blast and burst of blue light tore through the room. When the world shuffled back into recognizable order, Jeff realized somebody nearby was screaming.
After a moment, he figured out that was him. His legs and hips had been torn off and he was currently decorating the floor beneath him with shredded intestines and a copious amount of blood.
His sergeant was nowhere to be seen, presumably reduced to a spray of gore baked onto the wall, while his fellow soldier had had his head ripped in half by shrapnel.
