...a pipe bomb.

"Hopefully this is loud and bright enough," Grigori mutters under his breath, throwing it behind Curt's van.

(And before you say anything, pipe bombs were able to be found by the time the special infected came along, which took about two weeks.)

[I wasn't going to say anything; at any rate the opening cutscene in L4D has Zoey throwing one and seeming familiar with its use.]

The horde abruptly breaks off the attack to pursue the pipe bomb. They cluster around it drunkenly as its beeping increases in speed before it detonates, sending bits of zombie gore flying all around.

All is quiet...for the moment.

Whhile picking charred bits of zombie off of him Derek mouths to Gregori, "Where did you get that?"

Fortunately, Curt seems to largely have escaped the attentions of the horde; it seems zombies favor small suspiciously beeping objects over beating the stuffing out of Survivors. One of his eyes has been blackened, however.

Curt was moving slightly but his body language was saying on word "OW." in a very long way. He smiled as he saw the aftermath of his suicide run at the zombie hord but noticed the smell of something burning. The slowly got out of the van and smiled at the two survivors rather painfully as they ran towards him.

after the explosion, Derek sees Curt getting out of the van and starts to walk over to him with the mad preacher, all the while smelling something burning.

A tentacle-like appendage suddenly whips out of the darkness around Derek's neck, pulling him away from the other two Survivors. Meanwhile, a gurgling noise from the rooftop above heralds the return of the bloated zombie from before, peering over the edge at them.

Derek scrambles for the concealed pocket knife he carried with him, found it and did his best to sever the tentacle around his neck off of him.

The shot punches through the zombie's head, reducing it to so much rotting pulp. The corpse, leaking copious amounts of bile, tumbles over the side and splatters on the ground, fairly detonating and dousing Curt and Grigori with its bile with a "boom" sound.

Derek manages to sever the tentacle, thereby freeing himself rom its grasp. he stands up and walks back over to the other 2 survivors. "I think we should make a point of leaving."

Yet another horde swarms around the corner and, drawn to the scent of the bile-covered Curt and Grigori, they mob the Survivors. A tall, coughing figure retreats from where the tentacle was lost.

"The instant we get an opening make a break for it," he stammers.

"There's one." Derek says roling through the gap breaking free of the horde.

As Derek stands up from his roll, an unearthly shriek splits the air and a shadow hurtles towards him from a nearby window. The Hunter collides with the still-off-balance Survivor and knocks the breath from his lungs, claws raking at his chest as he hits the ground.

In the background, loud jukebox music can be heard along with shotgun blasts, from somewhere in the distance.

Aside from the aforementioned sounds, there is also a very welcome sound in the distance; the distinctive THWUMP-THWUMP-THWUMP of a helicopter rotor, getting louder by the minute.
