[Siena has now been annexed by Florence, in that case. The Renaissance, IIRC, has already started.]

( Very Happy One of many steps to Italian unification completed. What is my current relationship with the Papal States and the R. of Mondea?)

[Numbers: The Papal States are pretty neutral, Mondea views you as a security threat.]

The Ottoman Empire isn't interested in the slightest. Venice accepts almost immediately, however, along with Serbia. Hungary does not accept but does indicate it would like friendly relations for the time being and Poland-Lithuania doesn't even respond.

The Republik of Florence is rather happy to find allies, and agrees to the alliance. Florence tries just like octavious to be on friendly footing with the Papal States.

The Papal States treat the Byzantine ambassadors coolly; the Byzantine Empire and the Catholic Church were never on great terms and the declaration of religious tolerance has done nothing to improve them. Long story short is that an alliance is HIGHLY unlikely.

The Ottomans suffer a disastrous defeat to the Timurids at the Battle of Ankara. Sultan Bayezid I is killed and, in the aftermath, confusion as to the successor leads to civil war. Ottoman forces on the border with Byzantium are gutted for battles in Anatolia, leaving only a skeleton crew behind against the Byzantines.

(Well, I'm board, and right now, this seems like an old fashioned version of Imperialism. So why not? I'll jump in as Norway/Sweden/Denmark. For my purposes, I'm going to change the traditional time line up just a bit; in my timeline, Olaf IV of Norway (Olaf II of Denmark) lived at least until 1400, and produced an heir by some rather unimportant consort. This is Olaf Olafsson, who is going to ultimately be my first Monarch. (I'll set his birth date arbitrarily as sometime in 1396)

At some point between between 1400 and present, Olaf IV died as history says he did. Margaret continued as regent for her grandson, and made all the historically correct choices, leading Young Olaf to find himself kind of a recently united Norway/Sweden/Denmark/etc. (It's called the Kalmar Union. Look it up on Wikipedia. It's Awesome.) Olaf, now almost 19 years old, takes over the throne. For stylistic questions, Olaf is known as King of Norway, Sweden, Denmark; don't bother too much about his numeral; he's V in Norway, and III in both Sweden and Denmark. The territory he rules is most likely referred to as the Kalmar Union, or the Nordic Union.)

King Olaf Olafsson calls a council of advisers, ambassadors, and learned men to meet with him at Kalmar Castle, where he has decided to hold his court "provisionally" (read; he doesn't want to upset other important cities, but this is where he's going to do it).

He asks the learned men who arrive to try to find common inroads amongst the three countries, including possibilities for a common language, and currency.

He then orders his ambassadors to extend the hand of friendship to the English to the west, the Holy Roman Empire to the South, and the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland to the East. He also orders them to open trade talks with the Hanseatic League.

[Ah, a surviving Kalmar Union, is it? Knew about it beforehand, as a matter of fact, and was planning to do that as well. Also, Numbers: Not sure. Probably depends on Florence's plans for the Papacy; if you draw too heavily on the Pope's influence you may end up coloring him with Italian national interest and thus alienating other Catholic nations; a bit like what happened with the Anglican church, only in pretty much every country save Italian and German states.]

England's response is favorable; their only true allies at this point are Portugal, sinking into the quagmire that is the Iberian Peninsula, and turbulent Burgundy, a shaky ally at best.

The HRE, at least the northern German states such as Brandenburg, fears the possibility of Danish expansion into German lands. As such, their response is somewhat cool.

[Finland and the Hanseatic League will get back to you.]

The Republic of Florence, build infrastructure to Sienna, linking the Florentine and the conquered territories. Most of the Florentine army moves back north at the border with the Republic (or Duchy) of Mondea.

The Nordic Language is as yet crude, and unpopular. Academics struggle at the proposition of uniting subtleties between the languages.

[Alright, unwilling to do the research so I'm winging it.]

The Hanseatic League, while wary of the potential for overshadowing, is intrigued by the possibility.

Finland, wary of nearby Novgorod's power, accepts.

(Sorry, forget what I said about Finland; for some reason I mistakenly thought it was part of Russia. In fact, it is a part of Sweden at this time, and therefore part of me Cool ! Treat what I said as being toward Russia, instead; I'll go back and edit that. Also, you should look up the Hanseatic League; it's actually a really cool trade organization.)

The Kalmar Union declares its great friendship for the English People, (a merely rhetorical gesture), responds cooly to the Germans in kind, and opens trading with and through the Hanseatic League, or expands it, and donates money to help them build more ships, and trade more widely.

The Kalmar Union sends some explorer/settlers in the direction of Iceland/Greenland. They begin to demand more favorable from the Northern German states and whatever states lie to the south of Finland. They wait for word back from the Novgorodian gov't, and King Olaf continues efforts to unify his country. He orders the construction of a great cathedral at Kalmar. He also sends regards to the leader(s) of the Hanseatic league, and a small chest of jewels to back up his good will. He asks that they look in to Spanish and North African goods.
