"Here." With a roll of his eyes the mage tossed him a dowser. "Use that. Hold it steady by the string affixed to the top and it will gravitate towards the direction of those prisoners."

Naturally, the ruins had numerous staircases that led underground. The largest, a spiral staircase that looked as though it had at one point run up as well as down, was directly in front of them. The sense that something was off was nearly overwhelming - whatever it was seemed to be directly under them.

The stairwell was dark, at least until it wasn't. Oddly, there were quite a few witchlights set up down in the main antechamber, the sort that would have been only temporary. Someone had been down there.

Of course, that was obvious, given the contents of the room. The left side of the antechamber was mostly coated in rubble, and a few bloodstains. Next to it was what could only be described as a pile of flesh. It wasn't mangled, per se, it just looked like someone had taken a bunch of humanoid bodies and jammed them together like clay, with no regard for the anatomy of the result. For example there was what appeared to be a jaw on the sole of a foot, with an earlobe sticking out in place of a tongue. The whole thing was soaked in blood.

The right side appeared to have served as rudimentary living quarters for whoever had done this - it had been abandoned in a hurry, too. There were still bedrolls and the glowing embers of a fire, with an overturned cooking pot oozing what smelled like bile.

In the front of the antechamber was something obscured by an altar, but whatever it was had numerous black tentacle-like appendages splayed out over the floor, the altar couldn't conceal them.

One of the tentacles twitched slightly. The light glinting off the appendages appeared to denote scales.

The pile of flesh continued to lie there somewhat pathetically.

The pot, over on the right, continued to ooze bile. One of the tentacles twitched again, whatever was attached to them still hidden by the altar's shape.
