Mutavore lumbered forward, claws sweeping in a devastating strike at the Conn-Pod. Titan Atlas' right arm, undamaged, came up and smashed the claws out of the way. Off-balance, Mutavore's second strike went wide as the kaiju bellowed in pain, toppling into the water.

"Dang it. Trent, try to bring that arm of yours back up to speed." Tyler says as his brother glared at his twin. "Alright, after the pain settles."

"We need another shot at the wiring. Sound a shut down to the Shatter Dome." Trent says as he preps for the announcement.

"Shatter Dome, we need two minutes for retiring the main controls. Atlas needs to shut down again. Will reactivate when finished." The twins say as Atlas goes dark.

"Alright, let's get to work." Trent says as he gets out of his harness and starts working.

Iron Storm's repulsor blast slams into Mutavore's shoulder, tearing through the armor and blasting a glowing blue crater in the kaiju's flesh, spraying Kaiju Blue into the surf as the monster bellowed in pain, clawing its way to its feet.

shadow fang jumps up and readys its sword and blaster and jumps on the Mutavore swinging his sword for his chest.

The sword broke through the kaiju's thick hide, Kaiju Blue spurting out into the water from the wound as its bellow turned to a gurgle. More luminous kaiju blood dripped from Mutavore's maw as its breathing grew labored.

LOCCENT's feed blinked to life in the Conn-Pods of the active Jaegers. "Finish it! Finish it now!"

"Sorry Atlas." Trent says as the Jaeger reactivate before charging at Mutavore. The two blades have two different targets. One was the throat and the other was the heart. The damaged arm was only a second and a half slower but better than three seconds.

"Iron Storm finish this if we miss." They say as the jaeger gained on its target.

Atlas' blade plunged into Mutavore's chest and the monster slumped forward, collapsing into the water. LOCCENT pinged the Jaegers again. "Good work guys. The city of Los Angeles is in your debt. Return to the Shatterdome and stand by for debriefing."

The debrief proceeded as normal, barring the media storm that Mutavore had kicked off by breaching the Wall. Reporters were attempting to do anything short of kicking in the Shatterdome doors. Talking heads on the news insisted one way or the other, so on and so forth, nothing was done. The PPDC was dead and it didn't seem to be making a comeback despite all common sense ("Thing is, why are we expecting the US government to do anything that matches with common sense?" one of the techs snarked when he overheard the maybe-still-Rangers complaining)

It only got worse after, a week following the Mutavore attack, the first recorded double event occurred. By this time the remaining Jaegers (Striker Eureka, Coyote Tango, Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon) had joined the Shatterdome, leaving Singapore and Vancouver defenseless against the ravages of two even larger Category 4 kaiju, only stopping after multiple nuclear detonations that left most of the surrounding areas bathed in Kaiju Blue and radioactive fallout.

Two weeks passed. The portal at the bottom of the Pacific remained quiet. What little headway the neo-PPDC movement had got fizzled and died as advocates of the Wall of Life triumphantly pointed out the lack of kaiju.

"Another quiet day. " Marley says.

Marley puts a cold beer next to Franco. where Franco promptly opens it and takes a long pull.

The pilots who hadn't been staying at the Los Angeles Shatterdome during the Mutavore event had largely kept to themselves, aside from Chuck Hansen making it pretty plain that he was a jerkass.

In the middle of Franco's drink an alarm sounded, followed by a robotic voice:

ALERT: CATEGORY 5 KAIJU DETECTED
TRIPLE EVENT

A nearby worker looked at Marley with fear in his eyes. "Category...five? What?!"

at the sound of the alarm, Franco chokes on his drink.

Marley looks at the worker. "Nothing we can't handle." he says with a smile.

Franco gets up, wipes the beer from his face and heads out. "Let's go Gatt!" He calls back.

Tyler and Trent were sparing in the training area before freezing instantly after the announcement. Tyler walked over to his radio and turned it on.

"This is Tyler from Atlas team, are jaegers going into battle? Repeat are the jaegers being activated?" Tyler asked before clearing the channel as both twins waited tensely for any respons.

"Unknown at this time."

The newsfeed was tracking the three (!) Category 5 kaiju. One of them, codenamed Slattern, was heading for Hong Kong. Another, this one labeled Emblazon, was moving in the direction of Pearl City, Hawaii. The final kaiju, Harbinger, was moving towards the Pacific coast of the United States.

The news cut to amateur footage of a ferry off Pearl Harbor, showing a massive glowing mass approaching through the water, only to burst through the surface on massive wings, each the size of small towns, and take to the sky, crackling with electricity. Emblazon, from what limited vision the camera had, was apparently shaped a bit like a pterodactyl crossed with a manta ray.

The sky above the boat was getting extremely cloudy before a bright flash was visible, overwhelming the camera and the feed cut off. The news station announced they had lost all contact with Hawaii. Mere minutes later, to the west, over the Wall, a surging wave of dark clouds was visible, shot through with lightning bolts.

"Can we put the Jaegers on standby? At least?" Tyler asked before clearing the channel.

"The Jaegers have been on standby since Mutavore, Ranger."

Overhead, the roiling wall of thunderclouds and lightning (very, very frightening) surged across Los Angeles. The news abruptly shut off, as did every other communication outlet across large distances. Shortwave radio still worked, power was still up, but telecommunications across large distances were down.
