For the sake of reducing arguments, the news was set to the BBC instead of local stations or CNN.

Mesa grabbed a beer from the fridge. "Actually some governments are already dealing with riots. I mean, Otachi had wings, for Christ's sake. If that doesn't destroy the idea of the wall I don't know what does. Meanwhile Herc's out pitching a fit at City Hall because he can't get the helicopters fixed in case any of you seven that aren't piloting Ronin get recalled to your countries."

On the TV, the announcers were checking sources on what was going on when the sensor overlay went ballistic. The stationary sensors went dark, and one of the US Navy submarines also monitoring (USS Boise) ceased transmitting.

It took about a half hour for the BBC to figure out what was happening, but when they did, Mesa wrecked his tablet computer by nearly inhaling the can mid-swig and in the resulting coughing fit spewing beer all over the device.

The Breach, which previously had existed only in the Challenger Deep, had expanded. The area giving off radiation and electromagnetic signals was now the entirety of the Marianas Trench, fifteen thousand and eighty miles long.

Oh, and the entire goddamn thing was in Event State. The US military had raised its alertness condition to DEFCON 2 - the next step would be to re-arm tactical nuclear weapons that hadn't seen use since Brawler Yukon debuted in Vancouver. K-Watch, based out of Guam, was monitoring the situation. Media helicopters on the island were already feeding back footage of frantically deploying aircraft, mostly the modified AWACS used to keep direct tabs on kaiju movement.

Just then, "...and now we have confirmed that a kaiju has left the breach, and not only that but this is the first Category 5 kaiju on record and by a wide margin at that. It has received the codename Harbinger and...dear God!" He stopped talking, staring openmouthed at the live feed offscreen.

Since they could see what he was talking about, it was pretty easy to understand why he'd just about had a heart attack. Harbinger was huge - based on the footage they were seeing, the kaiju was half again as tall as Cherno Alpha. And the entire thing was a mobile mass of blades and pincers. It paused after hauling itself out of the water, then bellowed, the sheer sound of which caused the camera's audio to go dead after an earsplitting screech halfway through.

And then it simply walked across the base, plowing effortlessly through the buildings and tearing up the concrete airstrips. An AWACS was unlucky enough to come within reach just as it was taking off - the wreckage that crashed to the ground in a ball of flame seconds later didn't even resemble an airplane.

K-Watch stopped transmitting, but the US Navy had more than one sub monitoring and they were still going. The announcer was still staring at the camera while the ticker ran at the bottom of the screen, announcing each new kaiju detected in a clinical way that only a text-based account could. Right up until the point where whoever was running it decided to put in "God be with us."

****Port Jackson, Australia****

The minute that Australia's government lost contact with USS Providence's kaiju reports, Striker Eureka, for weeks under the direct control of the country's military, was ordered to stand guard at the Miracle Mile line outside the city harbor. If the world was going to end, the finest kaiju-killing machine mankind had to offer was going to go down fighting, taking on all comers.

It was barely forty-five minutes into the mission when the first kaiju appeared on the Sydney K-Watch sensor web - Category 4. Ten minutes later, with the Cat 4's corpse floating out to sea with a broken skull, another pair of kaiju attacked. Fifteen minutes later, Striker Eureka killed the second confirmed Category 5 by bludgeoning it with the corpse of one of those two.

An hour later and Striker was taking on seven kaiju at once. A serpentine head lunging at the Conn-Pod with fangs bared had its jaw snapped almost off by a backhand blow before Striker punted the Category 3 backwards into the surf. Turning, it caught the claw of a Category 4 kaiju and used the beast's momentum against it, hurling it into a charging compatriot's giant horns. A smaller beast had climbed onto the Jaeger's back and was unceremoniously dragged forward before Striker snapped the kaiju's spine over its knee, then slammed an elbow into a giant crab-thing's bulbous eyes.

Unfortunately, as Leatherback and Otachi had demonstrated, the kaiju weren't just giant monsters - they had bizarre abilities unlike almost anything seen on earth. Particularly Leatherback.

The kaiju in question was only a Category 3, but it saw its chance as Striker gave its crablike brethren the beating of its increasingly short life. Its tail arched over its head, pincerlike appendage reaching out and grabbing ahold of one of the "wings" on the Australian machine's back, before delivering a powerful electrical charge. Striker Eureka jerked spasmodically before its lights went dark and it slid into the standby position.

Turns out Striker didn't go down fighting, but helpless, paralyzed, as the five surviving kaiju systematically tore it to pieces before moving on to now-undefended Sydney.

****Pearl City, Hawaii****

America had long since decommissioned its last surviving Mark IV Jaeger, Hydra Corinthian. The USA hadn't even had a hand in restoring Romeo Blue to operational status - that had come out of the PPDC's dwindling budget. As such, Hawaii's options were limited and they knew it. No known naval ship could withstand a kaiju attack - the only aircraft carrier still operated by the Pacific Fleet, the Ronald Reagan, functioned on its own and largely as overwatch and support from a safe distance.

But Reagan was gone with all hands, snapped in half and pulled beneath the ocean by the oncoming horde of kaiju. The only real warship left in Pearl Harbor was a museum. But it would have to do. The USS Missouri stood exactly no chance. They knew it. The people of Pearl City and Honolulu knew it. They were already being evacuated just as fast as the Navy and Air Force could get them to California. The last of the Iowa-class battleships was here on her final mission - buy enough time for the majority of the population to escape.

With what limited crew they had available (most of the personnel were dedicated to evacuation), the erstwhile captain of the Missouri set them all to weapons systems. The battleship didn't need to leave her dock - why bother? Being any farther out to sea meant they would just get ambushed from below and besides, there wasn't a ship on Earth that could outrun a kaiju. Every single piece of equipment, every crewman with a hand to spare was dedicated to making sure the Missouri could dispense 16-inch 2000-pound packets of f*** you as fast as was humanly possible.

The first kaiju, a Category 2, decided it didn't care for Harpoon-2 missiles. It left in a hurry.

The next was a Category 3. It took nine sixteen-inch shells to the face and collapsed.

Another Category 3 appeared soon after, this one more thickly armored. It took a full salvo from the Missouri and then its secondary battery before closing and attacking the ship, destroying the foremost turret before the second one reloaded and punched its ticket.

Taking on water and missing a full third of its main armament, the last stand of the Missouri went on for another half hour before a Category 4, shrugging off the naval shells, pitched the ship into the heart of the city. But not before a full ninety percent of the civilians managed to evacuate.

****Vladivostok****

To say that Russia's government was displeased would have been a gross understatement. After the Double Event, they had gone so far as to threaten military action if Japan did not return Cherno Alpha to the decommissioned Shatterdome. But Japan kept dragging its feet and as a result, one lone Russian Army officer stood in a reinforced bunker, watching the sensor readouts as Vladivostok was swept off the map by a pair of Category 3 kaiju, seemingly impervious to the weapons the Russians threw at them.

That was, of course, where Lieutenant Lev Spalko came in. His was a job not for the faint of heart, nor for those with anything to lose. His job, and those of the others in the Flaming Earth battalion, as they had taken to calling themselves, went all the way back to the days of Trespasser and Hundun, the earliest hours of the Kaiju War. Russia was always suspicious of her neighbors and didn't trust any of the other PPDC nations to really pull their weight. This attitude disappeared over time, but before President Putin had invented an alternative strategy should the Jaegers fail.

Which they had. And so Spalko found himself sitting in a bunker, a network of armed nuclear devices mere meters above his head, hands shaking as he reached for a bottle of vodka to steady his nerves. One of the Category 4's (he thought it had been tagged Charybdis) was approaching his little plot of land. Wasn't that nice, his plot of land, almost as if he owned a farm. Farming nuclear weapons. That was an interesting idea.

Ah. Now Charybdis was almost directly overhead. His hands were shaking so much he wondered if he'd actually be able to press the button. Stupid, really, not having these set up remotely, but paranoia was paranoia and paranoia was what Russia did best. And his job here was to protect Russia. He would be gone, but there were hundreds more like him, hundreds of additional bunkers and their nuclear devices and hopefully more of them than there were kaiju. With that last thought, it was all suddenly clear. Or maybe it was just the vodka, this was his eighth bottle after all.

"For the Rodina!" He pressed the button and leaned back in his chair, draining the bottle as his world vanished in a sudden burst of light.

****New York City****

Traffic was stopped completely. More than completely. Most of the cars in the street were just plain shut off and people were standing beside them looking up at the multitude of screens plastered all over the skyscrapers around them. Every screen was playing CNN's coverage of the event. More than one person on the street was openly weeping and a few were simply praying.

That's when the police showed up, starting to shepherd people into the subway system. Naturally, people were confused. Then the National Guard arrived to clear things up - a soldier with a megaphone spoke: "This is the New York National Guard. As of ten minutes ago, the United States of America is under martial law. Everyone move into the subway stations, NOW!" People were moving now, so they had that at least. Nobody seemed to know what was happening or why the National Guard had been put in charge.

That's when they heard a reverberating sound straight out of a horror movie, or maybe Jurassic Park. As one, the crowd turned to look out at the bay - and watched as a panther-like kaiju toppled the Statue of Liberty.

Then they figured it out, and as soon as they did, they panicked.

Mesa, tossing his ruined tablet onto the table, proceeded to get a phone call. Answering it, he hadn't even finished saying "Yeah?" before the entire room heard Herc bellow, "GET THE RANGERS TO THE DRIVE-SUIT ROOMS NOW!!!"

The Russians, who had shown the least reaction (really, were those two secretly robots or something?), got up and went for the door, calm as ever.

Pretty soon the Jaegers were suited up and arrayed at the Miracle Mile, outside Tokyo Bay. Mesa was flying overwatch as usual and Don was running LOCCENT's controller. "Keep your eyes peeled, Rangers. We're being approached by three kaiju; two are Category 4, codenames Raiju, Scunner. The last one is Category 5, codename Aegaeon. Information appearing on your HUDs...now."
